Back to School Is Here: Helping Your Child Start the New Term.
The holidays are coming to an end, school bags are coming back out, and classrooms are getting ready to welcome children again. Back-to-school week is officially here!
For parents, this week can feel like a race to get everything ready. Uniforms need checking, school supplies need replacing, sleep schedules need adjusting, and children need to switch from holiday mode back to learning mode.
But preparing for a new school term isn’t only about buying notebooks and getting uniforms ready. It’s also about helping children return to school confident, curious and excited to learn.
1. Get Back Into a School Routine
During the holidays, bedtimes and morning routines can become more relaxed. With school resuming, gradually returning to a regular routine can make those first few mornings much easier.
Set an appropriate bedtime, prepare school clothes and bags the night before, and create a simple morning routine your child can follow.
A well-rested child is more likely to arrive at school ready to participate, concentrate and learn.
2. Create a Learning Space at Home
Learning doesn’t end when the school bell rings.Creating a small, organised space at home for homework, reading and educational activities can help children develop better study habits.
It doesn’t have to be complicated. A comfortable chair, a table, good lighting and easy access to learning materials can create an environment where children can focus.
3. Make Learning Fun Again
After weeks away from the classroom, some children may need a little encouragement to get excited about learning again.
This is where learning through play can help.Puzzles can encourage problem-solving and concentration. Building sets can develop creativity and spatial thinking. STEM toys can introduce children to science, engineering and experimentation, while arts and crafts can encourage imagination and self-expression.Even board games can help children practise patience, communication, counting and strategic thinking. When children enjoy the process, learning becomes something they want to do rather than something they have to do.
4. Encourage Reading Every Day
One of the simplest back-to-school habits parents can introduce is daily reading.Depending on your child’s age, this could mean reading a story together before bedtime, allowing them to read independently or asking them questions about a book they are currently reading. A few minutes of reading each day can help build vocabulary, comprehension and confidence.
5. Talk About the New School Term
Children can have mixed feelings about returning to school. Some are excited to see their friends again, while others may feel nervous about a new class, new teachers or more challenging schoolwork.Ask your child how they feel about returning to school. Talk about what they’re looking forward to and anything they’re worried about.Sometimes, simply knowing that someone is listening can make the transition easier.
6. Don’t Forget Playtime
Once school resumes, schedules can quickly become filled with classes, homework and extracurricular activities. But children still need time to play.Play gives children an opportunity to explore ideas, use their imagination, develop social skills and relax after a busy school day.Choosing toys and activities that combine fun with learning can make playtime even more valuable.
